6 Things Young People Can Learn From The Older

It’s a widely known fact that young people have a lot to learn from older generations. Their experiences are what shaped the way they view life. They greatly contributed to their personalities, stories, emotions, and everything that they have achieved up to this day. No matter what you think you have gone through, elders have probably seen it all. Older people are known for their compassion and their endless support and love.

Many children like to spend time with older people because they each tend to have an inherently significant level of tolerance and love toward each other. Young people provide elders with the companionship that they need, and it allows them to feel young again. Older people have endless interesting stories, care, and warmth to share. However, for the most part, people usually forget that older people have so much more to offer. Here are 6 things that young people can learn from the older ones.

1. History

This may seem quite obvious, but older people have a great deal of history to share with the younger ones. History doesn’t necessarily have to be stories about the Cold War or the Great Depression. However, if the elderly person has lived through these significant historical events, you can learn about them through a different set of eyes, firsthand experiences, and what it was like to live during these events. History, though, can be anything regarding life back then. You can learn a great deal about core values or beliefs back in the day. It can be interesting to explore how people’s mindsets have changed over time. It’s exciting to learn about history from the places they visited, how they occupied themselves and their time, the education that they received, the theater and cinema at the time, the types of art that were popular, and the music that they listened to. History is much more than pages in a book. It is an evolved- abandoned even- culture and mindset.

2. Obstacles

Everyone faces obstacles in life; the more you live, the more of them you encounter. Because not all young people know what it’s like to lose a job in times of financial strain, or because someone experiencing their first break-up may think that they will not be able to love again, older people are the perfect example that life resumes no matter what. They have lost jobs, they’ve been happy, depressed, they’ve broken up, loved again, even probably had children, and lost many loved ones. Yet, they have still made it through it all. Young people have a lot to learn about how to face obstacles and challenges from the elderly.

3. Skills

In the age of technology, many skills and activities have almost gone extinct. Although we can’t deny that the technology here in today’s world has helped elders, skills that were integral for the elderly to learn as kids and practiced every day are foreign to many young people. Skills such as woodworking, sewing, and crocheting can be very interesting and useful to learn. Many young people have no idea how to do them, and the elderly are a great source of knowledge and information when it comes to such activities and skills.

4. Thankfulness

As people grow up, they learn to appreciate the little things in life. It can be hard to grasp the fact that many of the things that we take for granted are in fact blessings. Elders know that health, peacefulness, love, and appreciation don’t come easy. They understand that these things can be lost in a heartbeat and have therefore learned to become thankful for each beautiful thing that life has to offer. Young people can learn a lot about the concepts of thankfulness, gratitude, and appreciation of life from the elderly.

5. How to Have Fun

This may seem like a lame thing to learn from the elders. Though, don’t forget that they have lived most of their lives without streaming services, smartphones, or video games. They didn’t even have the variety of outings and entertainment that we have today. This makes them the most experienced when it comes to turning any basic thing into a more interesting and fun activity. They know how to keep themselves entertained, and can give you tips on how to avoid boredom even when your internet is down.

6. Importance of Family

We all sometimes get frustrated from our family and wish for a little more freedom. However, if anyone knows that a family is never perfect, it’s the elders. They were birthed into their parents’ households and went on to birth a family of their own. They know that all families come with obstacles and troubles. Though, they still understand how valuable and important a family is, which is something that young people can learn from them.

Older people have a lot to teach to young children. Though they may be known for their tenderness, kindheartedness, and affection, they have tons of information, skills, and experiences to offer. Sometimes, we need to take a step back and perceive the world through the eyes of the wise.
