During a special meeting, the Saugus Union School District governing board voted to re-open their campuses for students as soon as Monday.
With four votes in favor and one vote to abstain, the board voted for students grades 1-2 to return to campus as soon as Feb. 22, TK and Kindergarten to return as soon as Feb. 25, grades 3-4 to return as soon as March 1, and grades 5-6 to return as soon as March 4.
Each school site may vary on what exact day the return to campus is implemented. Student’s families are set to be contacted by individual school sites.
Classes are to be split into morning and evening cohorts, where students would spend up to 90 minutes in “asynchronous learning” before or after on-campus learning for two-and-a-half hours, depending on the student’s schedule.
Many safety precautions are to be implemented to reduce the spread of COVID-19, including a rule barring students from bringing personal items to class.
“Classroom tools may not be shared,” said Edwin Clement, Assistant Superintendent of Education Services at the District. “Tools that must be shared will be sanitized.”
Hand sanitizer is set to be available to both students and staff at all times. Items that are required to be shared between students are to be placed in a “dirty box” where they can be sanitized and disinfected before being placed in a “clean box” for another student to use, according to Clement.
Parents picking students up on campus, students, and staff will all be required to wear cloth face coverings. Disposable face masks are to be available to all staff, N95 and KN95 masks are to be available to staff in close contact with students for longer than 15 minutes, such as campuses nurses.
“Gloves will be available to all employees,” said Dr. Jennifer Stevenson, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources for the District. “Face shields will also be available for all staff… Paper gowns avail for those in close contact with students as well.”
This decision follows the superintendents for the Newhall School District (NSD), the Castaic Union School District (CUSD) and the Sulphur Springs Union School District (SSUSD) announced that they plan to begin phasing students back into the classroom starting Monday.
On Tuesday, officials with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH) announced that the county had met the state’s threshold for five consecutive days with daily COVID-19 case rates standing at 25 cases per 100,000.
