Officers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Newhall area office arrested a drunk driver for driving under the influence and weapons charges this week.
“Freeway Service Patrol was called to the scene of a driver unconscious behind the wheel,” reads an official social media post from CHP Newhall. “They responded and located the driver asleep and heavily intoxicated behind the wheel.”
Freeway Service Patrol alerted CHP to the location. Upon asking the driver to exit, they began to “fumble with items on the seat to his right,” CHP removed the driver from the vehicle and patted them down, according to CHP officials.
“The officer discovered two loaded magazines, one high capacity, in the driver’s pocket,” reads the social media post. “A subsequent search of the vehicle located two unserialized handguns that were shoved between the cushion to the right of the driver seat.”
Christopher Cortez, 28, of Reseda, was subsequently arrested for DUI and weapons charges.
Cortez was transported to and booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. Their bail was set at $35,000.
