Newly-elected Santa Clarita City Councilmember Jason Gibbs joined KHTS Wednesday less than 24 hours after being sworn into office to discuss his priorities for his first term.
Gibbs came on air Wednesday morning after being sworn into office during a special meeting for the Santa Clarita City Council the previous evening.
“It feels a little more real now,” he said. “It’s wonderful, it’s humbling, it’s a delight. It really is.”
The newly-elected council member replaced Bob Kellar, who endorsed Gibbs for the seat following his decision to retire after serving for 20 years on the Santa Clarita City Council.
“It’s still a little surreal in that sense,” Gibbs said.
The first priority Gibbs talked about was the creations of a Public Safety Commission, something that he advocated for on the campaign trail.
“Everyone’s looking for the talk, and I think looking at a blue-ribbon commission like that is an important place to start,” Gibbs said. “So often we get uncomfortable talking about things that are very polarizing, and as elected leaders, you need to be able to do it.”

While he is dedicated to implementing this idea, Gibbs also said that he wanted to make sure it had been well-thought-out before he brought it before the council.
“I want to take a little time with it,” he said. “I want to take a little time over the holidays and coming into the new year, and really start thinking about how I want to approach doing these things.”
Gibbs also discussed what he did to prepare for his new role as a city councilman, as well as how he plans to maintain his sense of humor while in office.
“I still hope people will be comfortable joking with me,” he said. “I have kind of a little self-deprecating sense of humor, and I don’t plan on changing. I don’t want that to change.”
