Junior High Schoolers Encouraged To ‘Develop Their Passions’ At College Of The Canyons Winter Institute

The College of the Canyons (COC) Winter Institute has developed seasonal classes to identify and cultivate the passions of Santa Clarita junior high students and seats are still available.

Held at the COC Valencia and Canyon Country campuses, sixth through eighth graders are given the opportunity to explore the careers of robotics, photography, sports medicine and auto tech in an initiative to identify their passions.

The short-term classes and activities held between Jan. 3 through Jan. 7 are designed to serve students with career experience through the guidance of experienced college professors in a non-credit form, according to COC officials.

The College of the Canyons Community Education program offers non-credit, fee-based classes and activities year-round for individuals seeking experience over credit and this winter are reaching out to Santa Clarita middle schoolers, according to COC officials.

The following camp descriptions from Winter Institute officials encompass the program’s scheduled projects:

“This digital photography workshop will give you the technical knowledge needed to realize your creative potential. Students will be guided through fundamental camera controls and practical Photoshop editing techniques. We will explore fun, alternative and traditional photographic shooting techniques. You’ll also learn about non-destructive image retouching, resizing and more.”

“Come and discover the world of code and robotics! Learn to code, to build robots, to make a robot interact with its environment through actuators and sensors, to program it to perform different kinds of tasks, to communicate with your robot and to learn about the robotics industry and the career opportunities available in this field.”

“Join us to learn how to prevent and treat sports related injuries as well as be introduced to various professions in the field of Sports Medicine. This course will be taught by a Certified Athletic Trainer. Students will learn about common injuries in the athletic setting and will get hands-on experience in evaluation, taping and rehabilitating the ankle, knee, back, shoulder, wrist and hand.”

“Students will experience what it is like to work in an Automotive shop. They will learn how to maintain and repair a vehicle as well as safely handle the most common roadside emergencies. They will use top of the line industry tools and equipment while performing shop tasks just like the professionals.”

Each class is expected to encompass a group of exclusively sixth through eighth graders in activities that offer real-world experience.

The Winter Institute has already opened their registration and seats are filling up fast, according to COC officials.
