The 210 Freeway is set to be closed over the weekend south of the I-5 and 14 freeway interchange at the Newhall Pass for a paving project, affecting Santa Clarita traffic.
From Friday, Aug. 20 at 10 p.m. through to Monday, Aug. 23 at 5 a.m. the westbound 210 near Sylmar is set to be closed due to paving work, affecting traffic patterns.
“Westbound I-210 will be FULLY CLOSED this weekend, Friday Aug 20 – Mon. Aug 23, between Roxford Street & I-5 for paving work,” Caltrans officials tweeted. “Expect MAJOR delays through the Newhall Pass. Use http://Quickmap.dot.ca.gov to see traffic conditions. #BeWorkZoneAlert.”

The closures are listed by Caltrans as follows:
- Full closure of westbound I-210 between Interstate 5 (I-5) and Roxford Street
- Westbound Polk Street on-ramp
- Westbound Roxford Street on-ramp
- Westbound Yarnell Street on and off-ramp
- Westbound I-210 to I-5 Interchange
- Eastbound Paxton Street off-ramp
Drivers, including those in Santa Clarita, have been advised to use State Route 118 (SR-118) for an alternate route to the 210 Freeway, according to Caltrans officials.
The I-210 paving work is part of a $135.5 million project replacing all lanes of I-210 from Wheatland Avenue to I-5 with new pavement. The on and off-ramps and adjacent shoulders are also slated to be rehabilitated, according to Caltrans officials.
“Overhead sign structures, traffic loop detectors, center median barrier, and the guardrail system will be upgraded,” Caltrans officials stated. “This project is funded by Senate Bill 1 (SB 1), the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017.”
Some closures may start and end later, and all closures are weather permitting and subject to change.
California motorists are reportedly encouraged to check traffic conditions before driving to their destination by visiting the Caltrans Quickmap and should expect potential delays.
Residents and businesses located near the freeway may experience noise, vibrations and dust due to construction activities.
