The proposed skilled nursing facility in Saugus as well as renovations to the Sand Canyon Plaza were unanimously approved by the Santa Clarita Planning Commission during their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday.
The Santa Clarita Planning Commission unanimously approved the construction and operation of the Residential Healthcare Facility on Valley Center Drive on Tuesday, requesting only a few minor adjustments to the project.
Residing on the 26000 block of Valley Center Drive, the structure has been designed to accommodate 120-beds in a 51,000 square-foot Residential Healthcare Facility, according to officials with the project.
“We believe that this community is in need of skilled nursing facility beds,” said Clark Nelson, president of Providence Group during the meeting. “There is a big difference between a skilled nursing facility and an assisted living facility… In a skilled nursing facility, which is what we’re proposing, we provide around the clock registered nurses and we take care of clinically complex patients that need wound care, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, IV therapy and so much more.”
With only one operational skilled nursing facility in Santa Clarita, Nelson stressed the need for another facility to ensure incredible care from 150 additional nurses and staff.
The commission approved the project after the public hearing portion of the meeting, but requested a few minor changes to construction including the incorporation of a shade structure for the employee break area and a few operational electric vehicle charging stations.
With the Conditional Use Permit approved during the meeting, skilled nursing arrangements are able to proceed with the construction of the facility that is expected to provide 24-hour service to the 120-beds, according to organizers.

The Sand Canyon Plaza, which includes a 140-bed assisted living facility, was also approved by the planning commission to undergo renovations that downsize commercial space and increase assisted living amenities.
Having been unanimously approved by the planning commission in September, the Sand Canyon Plaza is undergoing changes to the original project and organizers are looking for approval to make these adjustments.
Residing on the northeast corner of Sand Canyon Road and Soledad Canyon Road, the original project consisted of 60,000 square feet of commercial space, a 85,000 square feet of an assisted living facility to accommodate 140-beds, 264 parking spaces, a water feature as well as 580 residential units, according to project organizers.
The proposed adjustments would not affect the residential units or the amount of assisted living beds, but would upsize the assisted living facility to accommodate additional amenities and downsize the water feature.
To accommodate these amenities, project organizers asked the commission to approve the reduction in retail/commercial square footage and increase the square footage of the assisted living facility as well as removing the parking garage, according to project organizers.
The revised motion was unanimously approved by the planning commission as organizers were able to provide evidence of adequate parking and the changes would not affect residential units.
