Driving Safe In School Zones: Advice From Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) has released an advisory for drivers in Santa Clarita and throughout the county detailing how to stay safe in school zones.

On Monday, the LASD released an advisory encouraging communities to stay safe in school zones amid school reopenings in LA County and Santa Clarita.

“There are going to be a lot more parents, students and staff out than residents have seen in more than a year,” said Sgt. Robert Hill with the LASD. “Please drive carefully in school zones, especially during pick-up and drop-off times.”

Officials say when driving around schools, it is best to drive slower, follow rules for drop-off and pickup, stop for school buses, keep an eye out for kids around school buses and avoid blocking crosswalks while waiting to turn.

Officials recommend that pedestrians look both ways and make sure drivers see them before crossing the street, walk on sidewalks, cross at crosswalks and keep an eye out for cars leaving or entering driveways or parking spaces.

In the advisory, officials mentioned the importance of watching out for school buses.

“The easiest, safest thing to do is to stop the car when you encounter a school bus with a stop sign and flashing red lights,” Hill said. “There are going to be students getting on and off the school bus. It’s also the law.”

According to California law, drivers have to stop if a school bus extends a stop sign with red lights flashing, and have to stay stopped until the lights are turned off.

If there is a two-lane road without a center divider or turn lane, drivers on both sides of the road have to stop, officials said.
