Santa Clarita’s Mission Opera To Present Live Rendition Of ‘Le 66’ In June

Mission Opera plans to present their rendition of ‘Le 66’ in a live outdoor operetta in June, their first live performance since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.

The comedic French operetta is scheduled to debut in a live outdoor performance in one-act on June 5, with following performances on June 6, 12 and 13 at United Methodist Church in Santa Clarita.

“This show is just a fun and funny good time and that’s something we all need after this pandemic,” said Mission Opera Co-founder, performer and Board of Directors member Shawn Taylor.

Rarely performed, ‘Le 66’ is a French comedic operetta written by composer Jacques Offenbach in 1856, centering around two traveling German musicians who get lost as they are going to help a distant cousin.

On the road, the musicians meet a peddler who sells them a lottery ticket – with the winning number 66. When their luck turns, they do some pretty unusual things until fate snaps them back to reality.

Mission Opera plans to present the show with its original French libretto and English dialogue on Saturday, June 5 and Saturday, June 12 at 6:00 p.m. as well as an all-English translation on Sunday, June 6 and Sunday, June 13 at 6:00 p.m.

Each show is scheduled to take place outdoors in the private parking lot of Santa Clarita United Methodist Church, beginning with a pre-show featuring arias performed by up-and-coming local singers.

The show is scheduled to last one hour and 20 minutes, including a 10 minute intermission.

To minimize any potential transmission of COVID-19, Le 66 has planned to include only three singers and presented only by the piano, rather than Mission Opera’s typical full orchestra.

“I wanted to find a comedy that featured a very few number of singers, to ensure safety and that COVID protocols could be in place so everyone feels protected,” said Mission Opera Artistic Director Dr. Joshua R. Wentz in a statement.

CDC protocols at the time of the show will be strictly followed, and face masks will be required at all times in the performing space, according to a statement from Mission Opera.

For those looking to attend virtually, the show on June 13 is expected to be live streamed at 6 p.m. on FaceBook

General admission tickets for the live show are $20 and can be purchased here or through Brown Paper Tickets.
