Santa Clarita was ranked the eighth safest mid-sized City in America due to its low crime rates.
Santa Clarita ranked the eighth safest city to live in out of 215 mid-sized cities studied across the nation, according to AdvisorSmith, a leading information resource for business advice and original research website.
“In this study, we used the most recently available data from the FBI, released in September 2020, which included crimes during calendar year 2019,” according to AdvisorSmith’s website. “Crimes considered in this report include violent crimes such as robbery, assault, rape and murder, as well as property crimes including burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft.”
Officials with the research website took 3,315 cities from throughout the country and divided them into small, mid-sized and large cities. Resulting in 3,037 small cities, 215 mid-sized cities and 63 large cities, according to officials.
Cities were divided into one of three groups based on population, with small cities having populations between 10,000 to 99,999 residents, mid-size cities from 100,000 to 300,000 residents and large cities having more than 300,000 residents, according to AdvisorSmith officials.
“Towns with populations below 10,000 were excluded from this study,” officials said.
Santa Clarita was ranked the eighth safest city due to AdvisorSmith’s research showing that the City’s violent crime rate was 4.2 per 1000 residents, and the City had a property crime score of 9.4.
Santa Clarita had a total crime score of 20.9.
One reason for Santa Clarita consistently ranking as a safe city is due to the deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department who work here.
“Out of the 23 sheriff’s stations what we have here is very unique and that is simple, an overwhelming amount of our employees live here in Santa Clarita, and because of that they truly, truly care about our success,” said Cpt. Justin Diez, with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. “When you work and live in the same place, it is that extra spark that makes a difference.”
The leading crime in Santa Clarita is theft, according to Diez.
Diez is urging all Santa Clarita Valley residents to remember the 9 p.m. routine, by locking their car doors, closing their garage doors and keeping their homes locked.
The captain is also reminding drivers to remember to lock their car doors and remove their keys from vehicles while out and about to prevent theft.
If done, Diez is hopeful the next time a report is conducted about safety, Santa Clarita will be higher up on the list.
Santa Clarita ranked higher than other mid-size cities in the general vicinity such as Glendale ranked at No. 17 and Orange ranked at No. 20.
This is not the first time Santa Clarita has been ranked as one of the top 10 safest cities to live in.

And back in August of 2019, Santa Clarita was ranked as one of the best cities to raise a child. Partially due to over 30 parks throughout the city as well as all the other recreation options available to parents with children.
In addition, Santa Clarita public schools also routinely rank in the top 10 percent among school systems.
Officials with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station continuously work with the City, the County and the public to determine areas where high crime occurs to conduct frequent crime suppression operations to keep those areas of the community safe.
“Law enforcement officers and fire personnel have historically lived in the Santa Clarita Valley because it has always been a safe community,” Diez said.
“The AdvisorSmith study just showcases why our Santa Clarita community is such a wonderful place to work, live and raise a family.”
