Poor Air Quality Expected In Santa Clarita Valley Amid Heat Wave

Officials with the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) are predicting poor air quality in the Santa Clarita Valley through Friday of this week.

AQMD issued an “ozone advisory” throughout the South Coast Air Basin, including Santa Clarita and the Coachella Valley, amid a heat wave.

High temperatures can bring about poor air quality because they lead to an increase in ozone formation and higher levels of ozone pollution, South Coast AQMD said.

Ground-level ozone, or smog, is the most common summertime pollutant according to South Coast AQMD.

Unhealthy or high Air Quality Index (AQI) levels are projected to be reached in the Santa Clarita Valley, the San Gabriel Mountains, the San Gabriel Valley, the Inland Empire and the San Bernardino Mountains this week, according to a report by South Coast AQMD.

The National Weather Service (NWS) is predicting high temperatures over southern California to last through this week due to an upper air high pressure ridge located over northern California and a low pressure system over Baja California.

This week’s high temperatures, coupled with light winds, are likely to lead to persistent levels of ozone pollution until cooling begins over the weekend, officials said.

Unhealthy air can lead to some adverse health effects. The effects are normally not serious for those who are not highly sensitive to air pollution, according to the air quality report.

Those with sensitivities to air pollution should avoid heavy physical activity when air quality is unhealthy. Those who are not sensitive should reduce heavy physical activity, officials said.

Ozone air pollution can cause respiratory health problems, including trouble breathing, asthma attacks and lung damage.

Research also indicates that ozone exposure can increase the risk of premature death. Children, older adults, and people with asthma or COPD may be more sensitive to the health effects of ozone.
