One Dead, Two Hospitalized In Connection To String Of Pitchess Detention Center Overdoses In Santa Clarita

One death and two overdoses were reported Monday at the Pitchess Detention Center in Santa Clarita which brought the recent string of drug overdoses at the facility to at least 12 within the last several months, officials said.

Around 11:55 p.m. Monday, emergency responders received reports of a medical emergency at the Santa Clarita Pitchess Detention Center on the 29000 block of The Old Road in Castaic, according to Cheryl Sims, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

27-year-old David Sanchez was identified as an inmate found dead in the facility, and his death is  suspected to be from an overdose, but the exact cause of death remains unknown as of 7 p.m. Tuesday, according to officials with the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.

During the same evening, two inmates had been admitted to the South Facility Infirmary where they were  later transported to a local hospital to be treated for potential overdoses, according to officials.

“At almost midnight, the south facility requested two ambulances,” Sims said.

The incident involving the two individuals who overdosed Monday is suspected to be related to the recent string of overdoses that have occurred at the Pitchess Detention Center over the last several months.

The extent of the two overdoses have not yet been released as of 7 p.m. Tuesday.

A recently implemented program by Sheriff Alex Villanueva provides inmates with access to Narcan, a medication that can reverse an opioid overdose if administered quickly, which has saved several inmate lives amid the string of overdoses.

The reason for how the inmates attained the narcotics remains unknown.
