L.A. County To Reinstate COVID-19 Mask Mandate Indoors

Los Angeles County is set to reinstate the mask mandate indoors, including in Santa Clarita, regardless of vaccination status starting Saturday due to an increase in COVID-19 cases in recent weeks.

The new mask mandate is set to go into effect at 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, and requires both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals to wear masks while indoors.

This mandate comes a week after Orange County made similar orders, as new hospitalizations and infections in unvaccinated people have continued to increase.

“We’re not where we need to be for the millions at risk of infection here in Los Angeles County, and waiting to do something will be too late, given what we’re seeing,” L.A. County Health Officer Dr. Muntu Davis said in a briefing Thursday.

Public Health reported 1,537 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, the highest since early March and the seventh consecutive day of new cases over 1,000.

Although masks are being required inside, no additional restrictions are expected to be put on businesses such as capacity limitations, according to officials.

“Masking indoors must again become a normal practice by all, regardless of vaccination status, so they can stop the trends and level of transmission we’re currently seeing,” Davis said.
