Possible Riot At Pitchess Results In Nearly 30 Deputies, Inmates Injured


At least 30 individuals, including deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, have been injured at Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic after a possible riot.

UPDATE (5:20p.m.): Nine people have been transported to a local hospital for non life-threatening injuries, six deputies, one Custody Assistant, and two inmates according to a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

In a statement from Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Thursday at 3:05p.m. Pitchess Detention Center-North County Correctional Facility deputy personnel were conducting a security check of a dorm when a deputy was assaulted by an inmate.

Multiple inmates in the dorm became involved, prompting a response from additional deputies.

After verbal commands did not gain compliance, the deputies used pepper spray and approximately 20-25 inmates were exposed to the chemical.

As of Thursday at 5:30p.m. the facility remains on lockdown at this time with no additional information available.

UPDATE (3:55 p.m.): Officials have reported at least 17 injuries, with most of the injured being inmates.

Around 3 p.m. Thursday, first responders received reports of a medical emergency at the Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic, according to Sean Ferguson, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

“A mass casualty response is responding,” Ferguson said.

Initial reports state that there are at least 20 inmates and 10 deputies injured, according to officials.
