Santa Clarita City Council Takes Position On Several Bills At City Council Meeting

The Santa Clarita City Council recently reviewed and took positions on five state bills and one federal bill focused on wildlife protection at their regular board meeting Tuesday.

At the meeting the council supported two bills, one of which included Federal Bill 1769, supporting the proposed expansion of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area in an effort to enhance trail connectivity and wildlife corridor in the Santa Clarita Valley.

The other bill the Council supported includes Senate Bill 619, which would delay the state from the ability to impose a penalty on local governments not in compliance with recent CalRecycle guidelines.

The council took an opposing stance on four senate bills related to local land use, zoning laws and monetary bails.

Senate Bill 12 would allow state agencies to preempt local land use authority and Senate Bill 679 would establish a new governing board in L.A. County that would be able to allocate new revenue through special taxes.

Senate Bill 778 would require local governments to approve the conversion of commercial or retail space into a residential accessory dwelling unit, without any conditions or the option to refuse. Senate Bill 262 would waive monetary bail for misdemeanors and some felonies.

All four of these bills were opposed by the City Council.
