Firefighter Killed By Off-Duty Employee In Agua Dulce Fire Station Shooting North Of Santa Clarita

The Los Angeles County Firefighter killed in an Agua Dulce fire station shooting north of Santa Clarita Tuesday morning was shot by an off-duty employee.

Around 10:55 a.m. Tuesday first responders received reports of a shooting involving firefighters at Fire Station 81 in the 8700 block of Sierra Highway in Agua Dulce, said Fire Chief  Daryl L. Osby of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

“As I stand here, I stand here with a heavy heart. Today is truly a sad day, a tragic day for the Los Angeles County Fire Department. I stand here from the perspective that you see other people do, I just never thought it would be me,” Osby said.

A 44-year-old firefighter died on scene, and a second 54-year-old firefighter captain was airlifted to a local hospital in critical condition, according to Osby.

He was a brave, committed, loyal member of the fire department,” Osby said.

The suspect in the reported shooting was an off-duty employee of the Department, according to Osby.

Approximately 30 minutes after the shooting, first responders received reports of a structure fire on the 2600 block of Bent Spur Drive in Acton.

Crews had reason to believe that the suspect may be barricaded at the location, so firefighters were told to not enter the property, according to Sheriff’s officials.

Once Sheriff’s deputies started clearing the property, fire crews worked to extinguish the fire with the assistance of helicopters from above, according to officials.

A body was found at the residence with a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Det. Brandon Dean with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
