A 15-year-old Santa Clarita native donned a cap and gown this month, marking her graduation from the University of California Irvine (UCI).
Kylie Munson graduated from UCI in June with a bachelor’s in biological sciences and plans to attend medical school in the future.
Munson began attending college at 11 years old as part of a program that allowed her to graduate with her high school diploma and associate’s degree at the same time.
The student graduated with her associate’s degree at 13 years old and transferred to UCI.
“I think my favorite part was just getting to experience (college) a little bit, even though I think that ties into my least favorite too because I was young and the social part wasn’t there as much,” Munson said.
A majority of her tuition and fees were paid for through scholarships and grants, including the top Regents’ Scholarship, UCI’s Stanley Behrens Scholarship and The Rose Hills Foundation scholarship, according to the Orange County Register article.
She relocated from Santa Clarita to be closer to Irvine, at only 13 years old moving was not as intimidating for her as one might assume.
“I lived on campus in an apartment,” Munson said. “It was good.”
Munson was involved in the campus life at Irvine, doing some community service and research and joining the university’s Spirit Squad cheer team with a background in competitive cheer.
“I liked it, it was a lot of fun,” Munson said. “It was definitely different than competitive. Competitive is just a lot more expectations and a lot more practice. This one was more for fun and supporting the school.”
As a part of the cheer squad, Munson would go to various school events.
“We would go to fundraisers and games,” Munson said. “It was a stress reliever for me.”
The graduate plans to spend the next year living at home in Santa Clarita.
“I think I definitely need a little break,” she said. “I might start studying for the MCAT and medical school, and then just hang out with my friends.”
