California has produced some of the biggest music acts the world has ever seen. Artists across a diverse range of genres have emerged from the state and taken the planet by storm. Indeed, there are so many incredible musicians from the Golden State that it is hard to narrow it down to a select few. Therefore, this list of the greatest bands to have come from California is based on notoriety and record sales. These are the music acts that others should look to and aspire to follow on from.
Metallica
Metallica are widely considered to be the best band to have come out of California. The heavy metal legends have been around since 1981, selling 58 million albums in the USA since their inception. This makes the group that consists of James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Robert Trujillo the third most successful band of all time. They are also ranked at number 61 in Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.
The band’s endurance throughout decades of musical evolution is perhaps their most commendable feat, and they should serve as inspiration to young musicians who want to hit the big time. They have even been immortalised in Guitar Hero: Metallica, highlighting what a huge draw the name is for players.
Guns N’ Roses
Guns N’ Roses are the one rock band that could have been considered bigger than Metallica, if the main group hadn’t famously split for nearly twenty years. After the Use Your Illusion tour of the early 1990s, the original members of GNR parted ways and it seemed as though they’d never get back together. That all changed in 2016, though, and the band has returned with a bang. It seems as though they’re making up for lost time as well and, like Metallica, have got their name into the gaming industry with the Guns N’ Roses slot from NetEnt.
Having slot game representation was one of the wisest marketing moves that the California rockers could have ever made. This is because the online casino industry is booming and the audience they can reach there is huge. This is highlighted by the fierce competition in the industry. Sites are almost required to offer slots free spins now as a way to attract players, because if they don’t they will lose out to their rivals. Players often learn about other offerings in popular culture thanks to slots, and some people may have found about the return of GNR through the online casino industry.
The Beach Boys
The Beach Boys have to get a mention in this list for the incredible impact they had on the music industry in the years that followed their arrival. The Californian group developed a highly unique sound that combined rock and roll, R&B, vocal harmonies, and unconventional recording techniques. Some of their most famous songs include Good Vibrations, Surfin’ U.S.A, and Wouldn’t It Be Nice. They stuck to such distinctive themes and musical patterns that their style was dubbed the “California sound.”
In addition to inspiring other acts and having an enduring effect on popular music, The Beach Boys are also deserving of recognition for their astounding commercial success. They were ranked by Rolling Stone at number 12 in its list of the greatest acts of all time. They have sold more than 100 million records worldwide, and the founding members were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.
The Eagles
No list of Californian bands could be complete without mentioning the Eagles. The band founded by Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Bernie Leadon, and Randy Meisner were one of the most famous music acts of the 1970s. During their hugely successful career, the Eagles have won six Grammy Awards, had six number one albums, and were inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. They are one of the quintessential American bands, with a distinctive style that can’t be found anywhere else outside the country.
Some of the best-known songs by the Eagles include Take it Easy and New Kid in Town. Perhaps the most famous song, though, is Hotel California. The 1976 track is known for being one of the most-played songs on radios all over the world, and it is frequently covered as well. Incredibly, the Eagles are still going, and there is talk of a new album in the pipeline.
Of course, there are plenty of other Californian bands that could argue for a place in this list. Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jefferson Airplane, Green Day, and The Doors are all among the greats of the state. However, in terms of success and lasting impact on the music industry, the bands listed here top the pile.
