Focus Physical Therapy Offers Special Equipment For Physical Therapy Treatment

Adam Laraway from Focus Physical Therapy in Santa Clarita discusses a special piece of equipment used to treat their patients during physical therapy.

“We have a piece of equipment that was approved in 2017 by the FDA called the Neubie. It is a form of direct current stimulation which has been a game changer for our practice. It really allows us to find the problem and get to the heart of the problem,” Laraway said.

The Neubie uses a mapping process with direct currents. Other pieces of equipment usually use alternating currents, unlike the Neubie. The Neubie mimics the nervous system by using direct currents. A sponge is used to map over the entire body and divides it into four quadrants. Depending on where a patient is having pain, they will focus on that quadrant.

When the painful area is found, Neubie will send a similar signal that the nervous system does and enhances the pain. Once those hotspots on the body are found, a pad is placed on top of them. The physical therapist will map over the body again to find a connection to that area. Once the connection is found, certain physical therapy movements are assigned to the patient.

“Some of them are really, really simple. It resets the nervous system and gets the brain to shut off those protective mechanisms that are causing the problem. It can be really quick, it can sometimes take a little bit longer depending on how long the problem has gone on,” Laraway said.

Laraway from Focus Physical Therapy has been a physical therapist for 21 years. The Neubie has only been around for four years. Laraway said he saw miraculous transformations with patients that made him hooked on Neubie. Patients who could not move their shoulders would work with Neubie and suddenly move their shoulders.
