SoCal Edison To Host Santa Clarita Valley Livestream On Public Safety Power Shutoffs

Southern California Edison (SCE) is planning to stream an hour-long meeting Thursday evening to talk about their efforts to reduce the use of Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) for the Santa Clarita Valley.

At the meeting, which is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, the company intends to give Santa Clarita Valley residents information on how SCE is protecting the power grid and to provide an opportunity for the community to supply feedback, officials said.

“To inform our communities about our wildfire safety efforts and the actions we are taking to reduce the impact of PSPS, we would like to invite you to a community live stream meeting for the Santa Clarita Valley community,” read a statement from SCE. “We will share information on our work to protect and harden the grid, PSPS, customer care programs, and resources.”

PSPS are intentional power shut-offs initiated by SCE to reduce the threat of wildfires in high-risk conditions, like when winds are high and humidity is low.

The Santa Clarita Valley has been struck by over two dozen PSPS outages over the last year, with mass outages encompassing most of the valley in January triggering a response from the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), which referred to the actions of SCE as both “tactless” and “deficient in meeting the standard its customers deserve.”

Representatives say SCE is aware of the disruptions caused by PSPS in the past, and that they are taking steps to lessen the use of PSPS.

“California has experienced an unprecedented number of catastrophic wildfires, with last year’s record wildfires illustrating the nature and extent of fire risk threat we are facing,” representatives said. “SCE remains dedicated to keeping our communities safe by making our infrastructure more resilient against the increasing threat of extreme conditions driven by climate change.”
