‘More Severe’ COVID-19 Variants Detected In Los Angeles County

Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH) officials announced Wednesday that additional cases of a potentially “more severe” COVID-19 variant have been detected.

Amidst the decline of COVID-19 cases among pregnant women as well as residents and staff at skilled nursing facilities, 34% of specimens analyzed at the Public Health Laboratory this past week contained a COVID-19 variant with the probability of being “more severe,” LADPH officials said.

The California variant, identified as B.1.427, is being compared to a similar variant in the United Kingdom, identified as B.1.1.7, in which both variants reportedly warrant a concern for “increased transmissibility.”

An additional 666 COVID-19 cases and 92 deaths were reported across L.A. County Wednesday, according to officials.

This brings the county’s cumulative total to 1,215,736 positive cases of COVID-19 and 22,960 deaths since the onset of the pandemic, according to the LADPH officials.

Testing results are available for over 6,032,000 people, with a cumulative 19 percent of people testing positive, according to officials.

As of Wednesday, there were 719 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in L.A. County, 25 percent of which were in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The Southern California Region has 31.8 percent staffed adult ICU capacity remaining as of the state’s last update on Tuesday, March 23, according to State health officials.

Residents are encouraged to continue to prevent the spread of COVID-19, to not gather in crowds, stay home when sick, wear a face covering and maintain physical distance from others when outside of the home.

A travel advisory remains in effect for L.A. County. Anyone who is arriving in L.A. County must self-quarantine for 10 days, according to officials.

Residents are asked to remain at home or lodging for 10 days and avoid contact with others.
