Two Additional COVID-19 U.K. Variant Cases Confirmed In L.A. County

Officials with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH) announced Saturday that the county had confirmed two additional cases of the U.K.-based B.1.1.7 COVID-19 variant within the county.

On Saturday, LADPH officials confirmed two additional cases of COVID-19 variant B.1.1.7, colloquially known as the U.K. variant, totaling 14 cases in Los Angeles County.

“With the U.K. variant circulating in the County, we will likely see more variant cases identified in the county,” said LADPH Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer in a statement Saturday.

The U.K.variant is known to spread more easily and quickly than other variants, and while more studies are needed to confirm exact details, scientists from the United Kingdom have reported evidence that suggests this variant may be “associated with an increased risk of death compared with other variants.”

“We must remain diligent with our safety measures even though we see overall decreases in cases, hospitalizations and deaths,” Ferrer said. “Let’s keep our guard up because we know letting our guard down will lead to more cases and, tragically, more deaths again.”

An additional 2,393 COVID-19 cases were reported in Los Angeles County on Saturday, along with 136 deaths, according to the LADPH.

This brings the county’s cumulative total to 1,179,063 positive cases of COVID-19 and 19,793 deaths since the onset of the pandemic, according to the department.

Testing results are available for over 5,750,000 people, with 19 percent of people testing positive.

As of Saturday, there were 2,498 people hospitalized with COVID-19, 30 percent of which were in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The Southern California Region has 14.8% staffed adult ICU capacity remaining as of the state’s last update on Tuesday, Feb. 16, according to state health officials.

Residents are encouraged to continue to prevent the spread of COVID-19, to not gather in crowds, stay home when sick, wear a face covering and maintain physical distance from others when outside of the home.

A travel advisory remains in effect for L.A. County. Anyone who is arriving in Los Angeles County must self-quarantine for 10 days. Residents are asked to remain at home or lodging for the 10 days and avoid contact with others.
