Saugus High Shooting Victims’ Names Added To Central Park Signs

The names of two children killed in the Saugus High shooting in November of 2019 are now forever immortalized on the entrance sign to Central Park.

The two signs at the main entrance to Central Park have a new addition, with “In Memoriam Gracie Muehlberger and Dominic Blackwell” printed at the bottom of each in honor of two Saugus High School students who were killed in the shooting on Nov. 14, 2019.

“There are mixed emotions, because you see your daughter’s name on a sign for this kind of reason,” said Gracie’s father Bryan. “I’m so glad to see her name and that there’s recognition for the impact she and Dominic have had on this community, but I wish it wasn’t there.”

Muehlberger mentioned that the families wished to thank two local vendors that helped with the installation, Feathers Signs & Printing and Stay Green Inc. Landscaping, as well as the City of Santa Clarita and Santa Clarita Valley Water Agency.

The Muehlberger and Blackwell families’ journey towards getting their childrens’ names on Central Park started in late spring of 2020, beginning with a social media campaign and petition to bring the idea to the Santa Clarita City Council.

In January, the Santa Clarita City Council approved the design of a memorial plaza at Central Park, which includes two 11-foot obelisks, with murals on each side made from mosaic tiles meant to memorialize 15-year-old Gracie Muehlberger and 14-year-old Dominic Blackwell.

“With the significant role Central Park played in the evacuation and healing process, the City has received numerous requests by residents to memorialize the event and its victims at the park,” reads a statement from the agenda packet of the meeting. “The families have expressed interest in Central Park being dedicated in memory of the victims, Gracie Muehlberger and Dominic Blackwell, and to create a memorial at the entrance of Central Park.”

“They’re wrapping up the architectural diagrams and contractors (…) last I heard they were supposed to start construction in March,” Bryan told KHTS on Friday.

The families hope to have the separate memorial obelisks complete by May.
