Vandalism On The Rise In Santa Clarita Weekend Arrests

The number of reported vandalism arrests in the Santa Clarita Valley over the weekend tripled when compared to the previous weekend.

Between Friday, Jan. 29 and Sunday, Jan. 31, a total of 34 arrests were reported by officials from both the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station and the California Highway Patrol Newhall Office.

Out of these arrests, six of them, or roughly 18%, were for reported incidents of vandalism. This number has tripled compared to the previous weekend’s two vandalism arrests.

Four of the six vandalism arrests from the weekend were related to incidents in which at least $400-worth of damage was incurred, according to arrest logs.

Drug- and alcohol-related arrests were down by an estimated 21% compared to the previous weekend, with only 10 such arrests reported over the weekend compared to the 17 from the weekend prior.

Just over half of the people arrested over the weekend gave home addresses outside of the Santa Clarita Valley, the most of which were reportedly from the Antelope Valley.

Nearly 53% of the arrests reported over the weekend were made on felony charges, including two individuals who were arrested for grand theft of copper wire late Friday night.

At around 10:30 p.m. Friday, emergency responders received a call for a rolled-over vehicle near the intersection of Copper Hill Drive and Deer Springs Drive in Saugus.

Both the driver and passenger were later arrested at the scene by deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department after further investigation.

“During investigation, deputies found numerous collections of copper wire within the truck, believed to be stolen,” said Deputy Natalie Arriaga, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station in a social media post Monday.

Jonathan Stahl, 42, of Saugus and Alberto Castaneda, 27, of Canyon Country, were both arrested for grand theft of copper and later released with a citation.
