Over 12,000 new coronavirus cases were reported in Los Angeles County Sunday, 187 of those from the Santa Clarita Valley.
An additional 12,488 COVID-19 cases were reported in Los Angeles County on Sunday, along with 91 deaths, according to officials with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH).
This brings the county’s cumulative total to 818,639 positive cases of COVID-19 and 10,773 deaths since March.
As of Sunday, there were 7,544 people hospitalized with COVID-19, 21% of which were in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
“The strategy for stopping the surge is fairly straightforward. When people stay away from other people, the virus cannot spread as it is doing now. The more we stay home and the more we avoid in-person activities with other people we don’t live with, the more we reduce the spread of the virus,” said Dr. Barbara Ferrer, director of public health. “While health officer orders create the framework for protecting each other, it is our actions that stop people from being hospitalized and dying. When we follow the public health safety directives with intention, we avoid getting and transmitting COVID-19; this is how we stop the surge.”
Testing results are available for nearly 4,800,000 individuals with 16% of people testing positive.
According to California health officials, the Southern California Region has 0.0% staffed adult ICU capacity remaining as of Sunday.
Health officials say that at its current rate, one person in Los Angeles County dies of COVID-19 every 10 minutes.
On Sunday, 187 new COVID-19 cases were reported in the Santa Clarita Valley, with 17,236 cumulative cases having been reported in the valley since March of 2020, according to the LADPH. These cases include:
- 12,543 in the City of Santa Clarita* (+149)
- 521 in the unincorporated areas of Canyon Country (+7)
- 3,001 in Castaic* (+15)
- 91 in the unincorporated areas of Saugus
- 648 in Stevenson Ranch (+11)
- 107 in the unincorporated areas of Valencia (+2)
- 196 in the unincorporated areas of Val Verde (+2)
- 57 in the unincorporated areas of Newhall
- 27 in the unincorporated areas of Bouquet Canyon (+1)
- 27 in the unincorporated areas of Saugus/Canyon Country
- 10 in unincorporated Sand Canyon
- Eight in San Francisquito/Bouquet Canyon
In nearby Acton, there have been 283 cumulative cases (+4), as well as 139 cases in Agua Dulce.
*As of Friday, Jan. 1, public health officials have recorded 1,956 cumulative cases have been reported at the Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center, including 1,425 at the North County Correctional Facility. Those cases are distributed between both the City of Santa Clarita and Castaic totals.
As of Saturday, Jan. 2, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital had conducted 15,514 COVID-19 tests. Of those, 2,570 had tested positive, and seven tests were still pending with Henry Mayo, according to Patrick Moody, spokesperson for the hospital.
There were 98 patients in the hospital as of Saturday, Jan. 2, while 705 patients have been discharged since the hospital’s first case was reported in March 2020, according to Moody.
One additional death was reported Saturday, with a total of 73 coronavirus deaths at the hospital, with at least 123 COVID-19 deaths reported across the Santa Clarita Valley since March 2020.
