L.A. County COVID-19 Hospitalizations Reach ‘Critical Levels,’ Deaths Surpass 11,000

Los Angeles County reported a record-breaking increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations Tuesday afternoon, as the county reached another tragic milestone of over 11,000 deaths related to the coronavirus, officials said.

An additional 13,512 COVID-19 cases were reported in Los Angeles County on Tuesday, along with 224 deaths, according to officials with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LADPH).

This brings the county’s cumulative total to 840,611 positive cases of COVID-19 and 11,071 deaths since March 2020.

More than one in every five people in L.A. County who have been tested are testing positive for coronavirus, officials said.

Public health officials continued to stress the need for public practice of physical distancing and wearing a cloth face covering.

“Healthcare workers and hospitals continue to be taxed and overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients. The devastating impact of the pandemic is disrupting emergency medical care due to the sheer volume of COVID-19 patients and staffing limitations. These challenges will get worse if we don’t slow COVID-19 spread,” reads Tuesday’s press release.

As of Tuesday, there were 7,898 people hospitalized with COVID-19, 21% of which were in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Testing results are available for nearly 4,826,000 individuals with 16% of people testing positive.

According to California health officials, the Southern California Region has 0.0% staffed adult ICU capacity remaining as of Tuesday.

Health officials say that at its current rate, one person in Los Angeles County dies of COVID-19 every 15 minutes. L.A. County Public Health director Dr. Barbara Ferrer noted Monday that it is “likely” that the County could begin reporting over 1,000 COVID-19 deaths a week if the surge continues.

“L.A. County reached the terrible milestone of more than 11,000 deaths due to COVID-19. As a community, we must commit to stopping the spread of COVID-19 in its tracks so that we can save as many lives as possible,” said Ferrer. “Roll out for COVID-19 vaccine continues in the phases recommended by the State and CDC as supply allows. And while vaccines are a powerful tool, we do not need to wait for vaccine to stop new COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and death. We can do that now. It takes every business and every resident to purposefully follow public health directives and safety measures. Please stay home and leave only for essential work or essential services.”

For those who have just returned from a trip outside of Los Angeles County, they must quarantine in place for 10 days and monitor for symptoms for 14 days. Testing is suggested if experiencing COVID-19 symptoms or if one is possibly exposed to someone who was positive.
