The City of Santa Clarita has been named the 13th safest city in the United States in a recent report from a personal finance company.
To assess the safest cities, the personal finance company MoneyGeek analyzed crime statistics and applied research findings to estimate the cost of crime in over 300 cities across the United States, each with populations over 100,000, according to the study.
“Amid record infections and deaths from COVID-19 and a summer of intense and pervasive social protests, safety has taken on new significance in 2020”, reads a statement from Moneygeek.
Researchers calculated each city’s cost of crime and ranked the cities based on the cost of crime per capita, thus finding the safest and most dangerous cities to live in America.
According to the study, Santa Clarita was rated the fourth safest city in the state of California. The cost of crime per capita totaled out to $315 per year for each Santa Clarita citizen, compared to $9,334 in the most dangerous city in America: St. Louis, MO.
The financial components factored to reach that number include medical and mental health care needs for victims, damage to and loss of property, as well as police and corrections costs. Aside from the looming danger of crime and lack of safety, people living in higher crime areas see depreciated home values and pay higher prices for essential needs like home and auto insurance.
Santa Clarita’s violent crime rate totaled at 127 with a property crime rate totaling at 944 in 2019.
Other Southern California cities made the list including Thousand Oaks ranking 2nd, Irvine placing 5th and Simi Valley ranking 9th.
