West Ranch Teen Delivers Holiday Cards To Santa Clarita Senior Home

A West Ranch High School student delivered nearly 100 holiday cards to the residents of the Oakmont Senior Home of Valencia last week in the hopes of spreading holiday cheer.

On Christmas Eve, Nicole Augusta, who serves as president of the National English Honor Society (NEHS) at West Ranch High School, delivered holiday cards to residents of the senior home, who are restricted from seeing their loved ones due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“Since our school year has been entirely remote we have really felt the loss of personal connections,” Augusta wrote in an email to KHTS. “So by decorating cards and writing personal messages in each card, we thought it would bring joy and a sense of connection to the seniors who may be missing their loved ones during the holidays.”

The West Ranch High School chapter of NEHS strives to “spread literacy in the community through service, in conjunction with the club motto, ‘duty goes with honor,’” according to Augusta

In the past, this has included collecting materials for the local homeless shelter, sending books to a school in Uganda, and providing resources to local elementary schools, according to Augusta.  2020 has encouraged the students to shift their focus to a little closer to home.

“This year, the club members knew it would be more important than ever to find a way to spread joy throughout the community, and decided to decorate holiday cards,” Augusta wrote. “The club officers urged members to decorate cards and write a personal message in each so as to bring a sense of connection to a special group in the community who may be missing their loved ones during the holidays.”

Officials say that the residents received their cards with joy, grateful for a reprieve from the dreary season that had prevented visits from friends and family, or coming together for holiday celebrations.
