Los Angeles County Creates Partnership To Deliver Vaccines To Nursing Homes

Los Angeles County officials announced a partnership with the public health service start-up Curative on Monday in an effort to deliver and administer COVID-19 Moderna vaccines to nursing home staff and residents.

As of Monday, 66,000 healthcare workers have received the COVID-19 vaccine in L.A. County, prompting county officials to look towards administering vaccines to the next group of recipients. This would include staff and residents of the Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs) in L.A. County, as they are considered to be an at-risk population.

The partnership between the county and Curative is the first of additional partnerships that county officials are expected to establish in order to facilitate the rollout of the vaccine to SNFs. Nursing home residents, along with staff members, have proven to be one of the most vulnerable and at-risk groups, with nursing facilities accounting for 5 percent of the county’s COVID-19 cases but 35 percent of the county’s deaths.

“Skilled Nursing Facilities have been hit hard by COVID-19, accounting for close to 3,000 deaths,” said Director of Public Health Dr. Barbara Ferrer. “The partnership with Curative and the City of Los Angeles will allow us to vaccinate SNF residents and staff quicker and with the flexibility needed to reach the 339 skilled nursing facilities in Los Angeles County.”

While the majority of SNFs in the county indicated they are capable of administering the vaccine themselves, the L.A. County Department of Public Health and Curative have activated mobile teams to assist in vaccinations.

The partnership is also expected to speed up the vaccination process by bringing in additional staff who can aid in vaccine education, registration and delivery.

“Los Angeles has been on the hardest-hit areas during the pandemic, and as the place where Curative was originally founded, it’s an honor to lead vaccinations delivery in the community,”  said Isaac Turner, CIO and co-founder of Curative. “This is a significant moment in history, and we are ready to bring these life-saving vaccines to the people who need them most.”

Already, the first Moderna vaccines have been delivered to 59 nursing home facilities in the county. Through the partnership with Curative, officials aim to deploy 69,000 vaccines to nursing home residents and staff in 339 SNFs by the end of the calendar year.
