The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is set to conduct a Maximum Enforcement Period over the New Year’s holiday in efforts to help keep Santa Clarita roadways safe from drunk drivers.
At least 38 people were killed in collisions in CA during the CHP’s Christmas Maximum Enforcement Period. CHP officers also made 573 DUI arrests statewide during the 78-hour holiday enforcement effort. A similar effort for New Year’s will begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 31.

Over major holidays and long weekends, such as New Year’s, the CHP launches their Maximum Enforcement Period, where all available officers are on patrol looking for impaired and distracted drivers, according to CHP officials.

The New Year’s Maximum Enforcement Period is expected to start at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 31 lasting until 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 3, according to CHP officials.
For Santa Clarita residents who are planning on attending a New Year’s party, CHP officials are reminding drivers to have a safe plan to get home, whether it be having a designated driver or utilizing one of several ride-share platforms available such as Uber or Lyft.
