Brave New World Comics, a local comic book shop in Newhall, has partnered with creator David Baron to offer a free mini-comic teasing the upcoming “Cobblestone Chronicles” series exclusively on the shop’s webstore.
On Christmas Day, Brave New World Comics announced that “The Cobblestone Chronicles: A Holiday Special,” a mini-comic about waiting for Christmas morning, was available exclusively on their webstore for free.
“I think the story speaks to all of our childhoods,” said writer David Baron. “Waiting for a holiday or birthday gift and just waiting for the night to pass.”
Baron originally wrote a version of the story for the mini-comic when he was teaching a writing class for a local high school back in 2013, using the story as an example for students on how quickly he can come up with stories.
“This class was filled with aspiring poets and novelists and comic book writers,” Baron recalled. “I told them I was going to write a comic book in front of them to show how quickly I could write, then go back to fine-tune the story.”
Seven years later, the story has taken shape in the form of the free mini-comic.
“Free entertainment during a pandemic is not something to be scoffed at,” said artist Elisa Wikey. “It’s just a snapshot, and there’s more to come.”
The mini-comic itself serves as an introduction to the world of Baron and Wikey’s “Cobblestone Chronicles,” a project that the two expect to be released late next year.
“So ‘The Cobblestone Chronicles’ is something I came up with a while back, but it wasn’t until I was having dinner with my wife and son, and we were talking about life and what my son missed during COVID,” Baron said. “He said he missed babysitters, because when they came over, he got to play all day.”
Baron said that the first entry in the series, “The Cobblestone Chronicles: Michael and the Babysitter Killer,” is a 64-page book based on that idea of having a babysitter over.
Once the idea took shape in Baron’s head, he reached out to Wikey, as he had been waiting for the right project to come along to work with her on.
“I’ve been waiting to work with Elisa, I’ve known her for multiple years,” Baron said. “I love her artstyle, I love her creativity, and I love her as a person.”

“The Cobblestone Chronicles” marks the first official comic book project for Wikey, who met Baron several years prior during a convention in Arizona.
“I’m very grateful that my first major project is under the wing of David,” Wikey said. “I love the story, but his enthusiasm about it makes me even more enthusiastic too.”
As the two worked on the project, the idea of using a mini-comic to preview the world they were creating came up. Then one day, Baron pitched the idea to Brave New World Comics store owner Andy Liegl when they were meeting to have Baron sign comics for Liegl to sell to his customers.
“He loved it,” Baron said. “He loved the idea.”
This is not the first time that Baron has partnered with Brave New World Comics to offer customers exclusive content and experiences.
In addition to attending multiple signing events at the shop over the past several years, Baron has created a number of exclusive comic book covers for the store, including four special covers for the current “Dune: House Atreides” series, the fourth of which is currently scheduled to come out on Jan. 27.
“I find Brave New World Comics to be just a great overall experience as a comic fan,” Baron said. “Every time I’m in there, Andy and his staff are always trying to give customers not only the best service they can provide, but the best experience there as well.”

“It’s just a total experience over there at Brave New World,” Baron said. “I’ve been to a lot of comic books stores over the world and while they all do good, Andy goes the extra mile to give you that little extra something.”
When “The Cobblestone Chronicles: Michael and the Babysitter Killer” comes out late next year, Baron says that readers “are going to have a light-hearted, fun experience with these characters.”
“I think that they’re going to be really pleased that there will be a character for everyone to enjoy,” Wikey added. “We have a nice eclectic collection of characters that will appear. There will be at least one character everyone can point to and relate to.”
