At 14 years old, Kalia Love Jones is the Santa Clarita filmmaker behind the animated short film “The Power of Hope”, which has been selected to be featured in three Academy Awards qualifying festivals.
The film, created by Jones when she was 13 years old, was inspired by a Michelle Obama speech and premiered at the Urbanworld Film Festival, which is based in New York, in September.
“I loved the whole speech. Michelle Obama has been a big inspiration to me. Listening to the message of overcoming adversity really touched me. It was so moving to me that I wanted to share the message with animation,” she said.
Jones wrote, directed, produced and funded “The Power of Hope”, according to representatives. She also co-wrote the film’s song.
The short film has been featured in the L.A. Shorts International Film Festival and HollyShorts Film Festival.
The animation is about a young woman who is an aspiring architect. When her mother becomes ill, the woman grapples with feelings of helplessness. Through the words of Michelle Obama, she is able to continue pursuing her dreams.
“I love animation but I also thought that having the film animated would be a good way to reach people who are my age,” Jones said.
The Santa Clarita teen cites Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey and Ava DuVernay as influential female figures she looks up to.
Jones spends hours each day drawing, crafting, and studying films to create her own animations, representatives add.
Along with her animation, the filmmaker has been featured in national media and television including ABC 7 in Los Angeles, CBS, CW, NBC and FOX.
“I hope I’ll be able to animate and direct films as a career. Ideally, I’ll be creating and directing feature animated films,” Jones said. “In the meantime, I would love for people to follow my journey and ‘The Power of Hope’ animated short film on social media.”
