An estimated 194,700 outstanding ballots remain to be processed in Los Angeles County, which potentially includes votes that could impact the close race between Congressman Mike Garcia and Assemblywoman Christy Smith in California’s 25th Congressional District (CA-25).
This most recent estimate was adjusted based on valid vote-by-mail ballots received in the mail Monday and the estimated number of ballots returned at vote centers and official drop boxes on Election Day, according to Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk (RR/CC) Dean C. Logan.
The estimate was broken down into four groups, 99,500 vote-by-mail ballots, 87,000 conditional voter registration ballots, 2,000 provisional ballots and 6,200 miscellaneous ballots.
Miscellaneous ballots were defined by the RR/CC’s office as ballots that have write-ins, are damaged, need to be remade, or require further review.
In Los Angeles County, vote-by-mail ballots that are postmarked by Election Day and received through Friday, Nov. 20, will continue to be accepted, but are not currently included in this estimate, according to county officials.

Since only a portion of Los Angeles County falls under CA-25, not all of the ballots will have votes for the local congressional district on them, however with Smith’s lead currently at 1,287 votes, the margins remain slim.
4,153,568 ballots have been processed in Los Angeles County, which accounts for 72.74 percent of eligible voters in the region.
County officials are expected to release another batch of results by Tuesday evening, a full schedule of election results updates is available here.
