Congressman Mike Garcia, R-Santa Clarita, has taken back the lead in the tightly-contested race for the seat in California’s 25th Congressional District (CA-25) after losing it to Assemblywoman Christy Smith, D-Santa Clarita, the day before.
As of 4:01 p.m. Tuesday, Garcia regained the lead from Smith in the CA-25 race, overcoming a gap of nearly 1,300 votes from the day before to establish a 159-vote lead.
These numbers include 2,932 votes from Los Angeles County, as well as 7,042 new votes from Ventura County.
Tuesday’s update comes after Smith regained the lead the day before, overcoming a 432-vote gap to take the lead by just under 1,300 votes.
When the first vote counts were reported at around 8:20 p.m. Tuesday, Smith held a larger lead over Garcia, as the first round of reporting came from Democratic-leaning vote-by-mail ballots.
However, as the voting center ballots have slowly continued to be reported, Garcia has gradually closed that gap.

Then, at around 7 p.m. Thursday, state officials reported that Garcia took the lead over Smith, leading by 265 votes at the time.
He expanded that lead during Friday’s update to 432. However, Smith earned 1,719 more votes than Garcia in Monday’s update, which placed her back in the lead by 1,287 votes.
The results as of Tuesday afternoon can be viewed below:

Across Los Angeles County, there were nearly 200,000 ballots that still needed to be counted as of Monday afternoon, with the exact number of ballots for CA-25 not released.
Neither campaign has officially declared victory or conceded as of Tuesday afternoon.
