Coronavirus Hospitalizations Increase In Los Angeles County

Coronavirus hospitalizations have increased 33 percent since October in Los Angeles County, with COVID-19 cases also on the rise.

The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 each day increased to over 800 last week and now has surpassed 900, according to Dr. Barbara Ferrer, director of the L.A. County Department of Public Health.

Ferrer looked back on information over the last eight months, noting that increases in cases invariably led to an increase in deaths within two weeks of when the increases were first noted.

There are 953 people currently hospitalized with COVID-19 as of Thursday, 28 percent of which are in the ICU.

“If collectively we fail to stop the acceleration of new cases we will have no choice but to look at additional action,” Ferrer said. “I know none of us want to step back to where we were, which is why we must continue to make good choices.”

A month ago in early-October, the daily number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 was between 650 and 725 patients, according to public health.

The number of hospitalizations is not matching the rise in cases due to the infections in a younger population, accoridng to Dr. Christina Ghaly, health services director.

“To everyone who is mourning the loss of a loved or a friend who has passed away from COVID-19, we wish you healing and peace,” said Ferrer.

Over 3,300,000 coronavirus tests have been conducted as of Thursday, with about 9 percent of those tests returning positive.
