Boy Scout Launches Fundraiser For Eagle Project To Benefit St. Bonnie’s Animal Sanctuary

A Santa Clarita boy scout is raising funds to build new outdoor installations for St. Bonnie’s Sanctuary, an animal rescue in Canyon County.

17-year-old Reece Demory, a senior at Saugus High School, was inspired to help St. Bonnie’s for several reasons. His family adopted a cat from the sanctuary and Demory also helped a friend complete his own Eagle Scout project at St. Bonnie’s in the past.

The new structures are a part of Demory’s Eagle Scout Service Project, which provides scouts with the opportunity to exhibit leadership and give back to their communities.

In order to begin their Eagle Scout projects, prospective candidates must create a carefully designed plan that must be presented to an oversight committee for approval before they begin the work to make the project a reality.

Unfortunately, coronavirus health restrictions have limited the number of volunteers that can help with the project.

“Because of COVID, I can only have a small group of volunteers rather than the large group we could normally have,” said Demory. “It makes it more challenging because now we have to take  safety precautions with social distancing, wearing masks, sanitizing our tools and so on.”

Demory plans to build a dog ramp with a tunnel, as well as four shade structures to keep them enriched, occupied and protected from the elements, he said. Any remaining funds will be donated to the shelter as a last gesture of gratitude to St. Bonnie’s and the services they provide.

In a best-case scenario, Demory hopes to have the project fundraised, built and installed by Dec. 10, he said.

“This project is important because obviously (St. Bonnie’s) goal isn’t to make money. They don’t have a lot of money to work with because it’s all run by volunteers, and big things that see constant use like shade structures and dog ramps are expensive,” Demory said.
