Mountain Snow, ‘Heavy Rain’ Could Affect Grapevine In Upcoming Storm,

With “heavy rain” expected in the Santa Clarita weather forecast and snow in the mountains Tuesday, officials are reminding residents to be aware of potential mud and debris flows and Grapevine closures.

Beginning Monday evening through Tuesday, heavy rain is expected with 1 to 3 inches of precipitation expected, according to officials with the National Weather Service, (NWS).

Heavy rain is when more than 0.3 inches of rain falls in an hour, according to NWS officials.

With the possibility of the rain, officials with the Los Angeles County Fire Department are offering tips for residents in burn areas to stay safe.

  • Acquire any needed sandbags and instructional materials at your local Los Angeles County fire station
  • Have an emergency plan in place that is easy for all family members to understand
  • Monitor radio and TV news closely for information about weather conditions and flooding in your area
  • If an evacuation is ordered, be prepared to leave immediately. Have alternate evacuation routes out of your neighborhood, according to Fire officials.
  • If a neighborhood is evacuated, identify important items to take, for example, computers, photos, important documents, medications and other essential items for the family and pets.

First responders also recommend having enough food and water to supply the family for at least a 72-hour period.

Always remember to include a radio and flashlight with fresh batteries in your emergency kit, according to officials.

Officials are also urging Santa Clarita residents to be storm smart, and follow these general storm safety guidelines:

  • Stay away from flood control channels, catch basins, canyons and natural waterways which are vulnerable to flooding during periods of heavy rain
  • Do not attempt to cross flooded areas and never enter moving water on foot or in a vehicle
  • If flooding traps you in your vehicle, stay in your vehicle, if possible,  call 9-1-1. If necessary, wait on top of your vehicle for assistance.
  • If you see someone who has been swept into moving water, do not enter the water and attempt a rescue. Immediately call 9-1-1 and, if possible, throw a rope or some type of flotation device to them.

Free sandbags are available at all fire stations in the Santa Clarita Valley: However not all Fire stations have sand.

For residents needing free sand can visit Fire Station 73 on Railroad Avenue near 15th Street in Newhall.

The California Highway Patrol, (CHP) also is ready to implement “Operation Snowflake” if snow or mudslides affect roadways in or around the Santa Clarita Valley, according to Officer Josh Greengard, spokesperson for the CHP Newhall Area Office.

“Snow levels will start above 7,000 feet, then drop to 4,500 feet by Tuesday night,” NWS officials said. “A dusting to 2 inches is possible for the I-5 Grapevine. Avoid traveling during this storm if you can.”
