Another Santa Clarita Storm To Bring Moderate Rain, Mountain Snow This Christmas

Moderate rain, gusty winds and mountain snow are expected in Santa Clarita’s weather forecast throughout the weekend, starting Wednesday until Christmas Day.

The National Weather Service (NWS) Los Angeles has announced that a storm system is projected to bring moderate rain, gusty winds, and mountain snow to southwestern California on Wednesday through Saturday, potentially impacting traffic.

Rainfall is expected to be moderate to heavy, with rainfall totals in valleys like Santa Clarita reaching one to three inches and rainfall in mountain areas reaching two to four inches, according to officials with the NWS.

The heaviest rainfall is projected between Wednesday and Thursday and periods of showers from Friday to Saturday with possible rain on Sunday, according to a statement from the NWS.

Above elevations of 7,000 feet, snow is expected to fall on Thursday, possibly reaching an elevation between 6,000 and 5,000 feet on Friday and Saturday, then reaching as low as 4,000 feet on Sunday, officials said.

Mountain travel is highly discouraged starting Wednesday, according to the NWS.

Major holiday travel delays are expected due to slippery roadways, pools of water and localized flooding, according to representatives with the NWS.

Wind gusts on Wednesday through Sunday coming from the southwest and west directions are projected to reach 20 to 40 miles per hour in residential areas and between 50 to 60 miles per hour in the mountains on Thursday, according to officials.

Santa Clarita residents needing free sand and sandbags can visit Los Angeles County Fire Station 73 on the corner of Railroad and 15th Street in Newhall.

All fire stations in Santa Clarita have free sandbags, but not all stations have sand, according to Fire officials.
