Understanding How To Bet On The NFL

Are you new to gambling and looking to bet on the NFL? Perhaps you are new to the NFL and want to know more? Maybe you are backing an NFL team to bet on and want to know it’s the right one? Whatever your reason might be, we have the answer for you!

We know how confusing it can be, betting on the NFL, especially if you are new to it all! Before you know it, you are lost in a world of unfamiliar phrases, unsure where to turn or who to trust!

Well, no more! Today we are here to explain to you how to bet on the NFL. Keep reading to find out more and learn how to place your bets with ease.

How to bet on the NFL

When it comes to betting on the NFL, you can place a few different types of bets. Let’s take a closer look at these to help you understand the terminology and discover which bet best suits you!

The point spread

The point spread is the most popular bet on any NFL game! Also known as line betting or sides, each game will have a favorite and an underdog; the sportsbook will decide by how many points the favorite team should win by.

A point spread bet will bet on whether the favorite will win by more than the number of points in the sportsbook, if the underdog will win, or if they will win by less points. For example, if one team has a -4.5 odds, they are considered the game’s favorites by 4.5 points. They would need to win their game by five or more points for you to win!

Totals

Total bets are when you bet on whether there will be more or less points in the game than the ones in the sportsbook. When it comes to total bets, we consider the total points from both teams in the game. For example, if the New York Giants beat the Dallas Cowboys 34-17, there would be a total of 51 points.

Total bets use ‘over’ and ‘under’ followed by a number. You will then bet whether you think the total points will be higher or lower than the number stated.

Money line

Money line betting is when you place a bet on which team will win the game. Compared to the other bets we looked at, money line bets have much shorter and longer odds, depending on how much one team is favored to the other.

Money line, totals, and point spread bets feature a range of wagers that can be placed, with successful bets being paid out on a pro-rata basis. Remember to consider your budget and only bet what you can afford.

Teasers

Teaser bets are a combination of point spread and totals. You can change the line in your favor, allowing you to adjust the odds! For example, if the Green Bay Packers are at -8.5 in their next game, you can change that line in your favor. Popular teasers are usually six points so that you can back the Packers at -2.5. Instead of having to win by nine or more, now they only need to win by three or more for you to win your bet!

Be warned; this does come at a cost! The odds will be much lower, meaning you won’t win as much money. You can place teaser bets in two or more selections, with the odds listed in the sportsbook.

Futures

Finally, we have future bets, where you can place a bet that will last the whole season. The most popular are bets on the Vince Lombardi Trophy or Super Bowl betting. We see these bets run into millions of dollars every year, with the chance of winning big depending on the odds you receive! Other future bets allow you to bet on who you think will win American and National Conferences, as well as betting on individual divisions; the choice is yours!

Final word

And there you have it, how to bet on the NFL! Whether you want to bet on one game or predict the season’s winners, there is a bet for you! Be sure to research your team before placing your bet, and remember never to bet more than you can afford. Take lots of breaks and reach out if you find you are struggling.
