Public Safety Power Shutoffs Considered For High Wind Areas In Santa Clarita Valley

On Monday, Southern California Edison (SCE) tweeted that Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) would be considered for certain California communities, which could include high-wind regions of the Santa Clarita Valley.

Certain communities in southern California, potentially including parts of Castaic and sections of Canyon Country, were announced as under consideration by SCE for power shutoffs.

“Due to weather conditions that may create the potential for elevated fire risk, Public Safety Power Shutoffs are under consideration for certain communities in SoCal,” SCE tweeted. “Visit http://sce.com/psps to find out which areas are under PSPS consideration.”

The link provided by SCE includes a map highlighting parts of Castaic and Canyon Country, listing the highlighted areas as ‘under PSPS consideration’, according to the website.

On Oct. 9, the National Weather Service of Los Angeles also posted a map of high-wind regions of Los Angeles County this week, which also indicates regions that may be considered for PSPS.

PSPS are intentional power shut-offs in places like Santa Clarita, initiated by Southern California Edison (SCE) to reduce the threat of wildfires in high-risk conditions, such as high winds and low humidity.

Public concerns regarding extensive power outages and PSPS have been continuing these past few years, with many residents concerned about their effects.

During shut offs, vulnerable communities are endangered due to lack of electricity, including those who rely on medical devices, medication that must be kept cool, and workers and students who rely on computers for school or work. Lost money due to food spoiling is also a concern for many families.

Assemblywoman Suzette Valladares, R- Santa Clarita, recently introduced a related bill which aims to work to provide communities with resources needed to ensure critical services during these outages.

The Santa Clarita Valley was struck by over two dozen PSPS outages last year, with mass outages encompassing most of the valley triggering a response from the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC).

The CPUC’s response describes the actions of SCE as both “tactless” and “deficient in meeting the standard its customers deserve.”
