How To Pick Winners At The Breeders’ Cup

The clock is ticking and soon it will be the 2021 Breeders’ Cup meeting. This great event is being held on the Del Mar racecourse on November 5 and 6. It’s a great meeting to place bets on with some of the best racehorses in the world taking part.

Sportsbooks are already offering odds on the two-day meeting in California. However, if you are new to all of this betting business, what is the best way of picking some winners? It’s going to involve a fair bit of research to do that, not just choose a name you like and place a wager or two.

The Breeders’ Cup is an event that has millions of dollars in prize money. There are no cheap races to be seen on the 5th and 6th of November. The meeting is described as the world championships and this year there is a staggering $31 million in prize money. You can bet that every trainer in the world would love to get a winner at this amazing race meeting.

One guarantee with a race meeting of this high standard is that picking a winner is no easy task. Rarely do you see a race that is totally dominated by one horse that goes off at very short odds. They are mainly all highly competitive races packed with horses, all who on their day can be top class competitors.

How do you pick a winner? Well, the formbook is going to be the place to start. This is helpful advice not just for the Breeders’ Cup but any horse race meeting. Before you place that bet, make sure you have looked at the form of all the horses that are taking part.

It’s not just a case of selecting the favourite or the one that has had several wins. If a horse has had been winning races, you need to know more about those victories. It may be that they have been beating poor opponents and are now facing much better ones. If that is the case, then the odds of it winning again might not be too high.

There are thousands of horses in training all over the world. They all have different levels of ability and that is why there are several grades in US racing. It wouldn’t be entertaining putting a top class horse in a race with one that has little ability at all, so they all run in different grades.

You therefore need to look to see what grade a horse has been running in. As horses improve, they will go up in grade. You need to study the form and work out if an improving horse can handle the move up in class.

Then again, there are horses that haven’t been getting good results and move down in grade. Again, if placing a bet, you want to judge if the drop in grade will bring about an improved performance, hopefully a win.

It’s not an easy task at all betting on horse racing. Thankfully, there are sites online such as horse.bet that offer an extremely useful guide to betting on horses and paying a visit is strongly advised.

The Breeders’ Cup is being held in California this year, but other tracks have also hosted the meeting. It is important when betting on horse racing to see if horses run well on the track. One that has several races at Del Mar will be used to the conditions there. Others who have never raced there might have problems handling them.

The ground conditions are of high importance when trying to choose a winner. One horse may hate running on soft ground, for others the softer the better. Running on firm ground may be perfect for runner but others may hate it. A lot of American races are run on a dirt track. The Breeders’ Cup attracts horses from all over the world and many are used to running on turf. Again, find out as much as you can about a horse before placing your bets.

At all race meetings, there are races taking place over a number of different distances. Before making your wagers, take a look at which distances your selection has been running over.

It may be that a horse has been running over shorter distances. They run well but if tried over a longer distance, may show improvement.  Others may need to run over a shorter distance to be seen at their best. Look at the form again, see what the trainers are saying about their runners. Look at their breeding too. If a horse is up in distance, look to see how their sire and/or dam performed in their career.

The time a horse has been off the track is also something to consider. Placing a bet on a horse that hasn’t run for a long time isn’t always a good idea. Some horses do run well after a long break, others need a run or two before achieving peak performance.

You can see therefore, trying to pick winners isn’t an easy task. You have to remember that even the best of horses can run poorly, so don’t place too high a stake on your selections. Research is the main word here though. The more information that you can learn, the better, so good luck in making your selections.
