Garcia’s Military Spouse Licensing Relief Act Passes Through House

The House of Representatives passed Congressman Mike Garcia (R-Santa Clarita) Military Spouse Licensing Relief Act on Thursday to help military families.

The bill aims to make the move from state to state that military members and their families often experience easier, allowing spouses of military members to retain their professional licenses with each move.

“If you’re a doctor, a nurse, a real estate agent, a teacher, a beautician and the spouse of an active duty member you don’t have to reapply in that new state,” said Garcia in a video posted to his Twitter.

The process of reapplying for a new professional license in a new state and the accompanying fees would be erased for military spouses through the bill.

Some states have policies to ease re-licensure burdens facing military families, but a 2019 Department of Defense survey found that one in five military spouses who work in a licensed profession waited 10 months or more to get their credentials again after a move.

According to the bill, military spouses faced a 22% unemployment rate and a 26% wage gap compared to their civilian counterparts before COVID-19.

“This bill helps soldiers who are on active duty right now and helps their families to make ends meet,” said Garcia.

The relief act passed the House of Representatives in a bipartisan vote and is set to be voted on in the Senate. It was first introduced in April of this year.
