Calgrove Fire Ignites On Southbound 5 Freeway In Santa Clarita


A brush fire, dubbed the Calgrove Fire, that ignited on the 5 Freeway prompted a full response from firefighters Saturday afternoon in Santa Clarita. 

UPDATE (12:44 p.m): Forward progress has been stopped as of 12:26 p.m. One injury has been reported as a result of the fire, according to Los Angeles County Supervisor Cheryl Sims.

On Saturday at around 11:46 a.m. firefighters received reports of a brush fire on the hillside of the southbound 5 Freeway near Calgrove Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department Twitter. 

As of 12:17 p.m. the fire is approximately 3 to 5 acres in size, according to a SCV Sheriff Twitter alert. 

According to preliminary reports, evacuations are underway for nearby residents as a result of the fire. First responders are advising people to avoid Towsley Canyon. 

The No. 3 and 4 lane of the southbound 5 Freeway have been impacted due to the fire for an unknown amount of time, according to California Highway Patrol Incident logs. 

A second fire was reported just minutes after the Calgrove incident, indicating to first responders that the incident may have been a result of arson, according to the CHP logs. 

Deputies were called out to the scene to investigate further as of 12 p.m.
