Attempted Murder Suspect Arrested After Santa Clarita Pursuit

A Canyon Country man was arrested on attempted murder charges Friday, after he led deputies on a pursuit and allegedly attempted to strike a deputy with his vehicle.

Around 7:15 p.m. Friday, deputies attempted to stop a driver on the 14 Freeway near Newhall Avenue who fled from law enforcement, according to officials.

“It was a pursuit of a reckless driver, possible DUI suspect,” said Lt. Chuck Calderaro, with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau.

The suspect drove to a mobile home park on Soledad Canyon Road near Agua Dulce Canyon Road, according to Sheriff’s officials.

The suspect foot bailed at the location and carjacked a person, according to Sheriff’s officials.

The suspect attempted to use the vehicle as a weapon to hit one of the pursuing deputies, at which point a deputy-involved shooting occurred, according to officials.

Manuel Chavez, 32, from Canyon Country, was arrested on several felonies including attempted murder on a police officer, Calderaro added.

Chavez was arrested and transported to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station’s jail with no bail given, according to arrest records.

The case has been submitted to the District Attorney’s Office.
