Statewide Flex Alert Extended Due To ‘Widespread Heat,’ Affecting Santa Clarita Residents

The California Independent System Operator (ISO) has extended a statewide Flex Alert for the second day to urge residents, including those in Santa Clarita, to conserve electricity amid the heat.

During the Flex Alert, which is scheduled on Thursday evening from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., residents are being urged to turn off unnecessary lights, use major appliances before 3 p.m. and after 10 p.m. and set their air conditioner thermostats to 78 degrees or higher, according to the California Independent System Operator (CAISO).

“The ISO is predicting an increase in electricity demand, primarily from air conditioning use,” according to a statement from ISO. “The increase can stretch electricity supplies thin and cause strain on our power grid, especially in the late afternoon and evening, when solar production goes offline and wind generation is uncertain, however, temperatures and electricity demand remains high.”

Residents are advised to conserve electricity to prevent power outages especially during the late afternoon and early evening, when the grid is most stressed, according to ISO.

Reducing energy amid a Flex Alert can help stabilize the power grid during a time of tight supply conditions, and prevent further emergency measures, including rotating power outages.

As Santa Clarita is expected to reach a high of 99 degrees Thursday, residents are also urged to adhere to the following protocols:

  • Drink plenty of water and keep hydrated throughout the day.
  • If you must go out, plan your day to avoid going out during the hottest hours, and wear sunscreen. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothes, and wear a hat or use an umbrella.
  • Cars get very hot. Never leave children or pets in cars and call 911 if you see a child or pet in a car alone.
  • Beware of heat-related illnesses, like heat stroke and call 911 if you see these symptoms: high body temperature, vomiting, and pale and clammy skin.
  • Check on those at risk, like those who are sick, older adults, pregnant women, and children, and those who live alone.
  • If you are wearing a mask, avoid strenuous workouts wearing face coverings or masks not intended for athletic purposes.
  • Visit your power company’s website or contact them by phone to determine if you are scheduled for a rolling power outage.

Temperatures are expected to maintain a high of 99 degrees and reach a low of 70 degrees throughout the weekend, according to The Weather Channel.
