Santa Clarita Sees 50 Percent Decrease In Arrests Over Labor Day Weekend Compared To 2020

Labor Day weekend resulted in almost a 50 percent decrease in arrests compared to the same time last year, with arson and robbery as outliers in a majority of drug-related arrests.

Between Friday, Sept. 3 and Monday, Sept. 6, a total of 20 arrests were reportedly made by deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station and the California Highway Patrol Newhall Office, compared to the 36 arrests made over 2020’s Labor Day weekend.

50 percent of arrests over the 2021 Labor Day weekend were drug and alcohol-related, while last year’s arrest logs indicated that drug and alcohol-related arrests represented nearly two-thirds of labor day weekend arrests, according to booking logs.

Of the ten drug and alcohol-related arrests, eight were listed as driving under the influence, while two were listed as possession of a controlled substance, according to law enforcement officials.

People travelling through the Santa Clarita Valley made up 11 of the 20 arrests with most receiving drug and alcohol-related charges, while two were arrested on violations of parole, one was arrested for domestic violence, one was arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle and one was arrested for vandalism with damages costing less than $400, according to arrest logs.

Eight Santa Clarita residents were arrested throughout the Labor Day weekend with four listed as alcohol and drug-related arrests, two as domestic violence, one as arson and one as displaying an imitation firearm, according to booking logs.

Further information regarding the alleged arson has yet to be released by the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, but the suspect has been given a $0 bail.
