Santa Clarita City Council To Discuss Hispanic Heritage Month, Hazard Mitigation Plan Updates

On Tuesday, Sep. 14, Santa Clarita’s City Council is slated to hold its next meeting, during which such topics as updates to the Local Hazard Mitigation Plan and the adoption of Hispanic Heritage Month are planned for discussion.

Hispanic Heritage Month, updates to the Local Hazard Mitigation Plan and a new parking area lighting project in Santa Clarita are scheduled topics of discussion for this week’s next City Council meeting.

“33.5 percent of the City of Santa Clarita’s population is comprised of Latinos who are continuously bringing a rich historical tradition to the City based upon the significant contributions made by Latino forebears,” City Council’s Hispanic Heritage Month proclamation reads.

The City’s proclamation on Hispanic Heritage month is said to reflect the belief in the important and continual contributions made by Latino community members as civil rights leaders and community organizers, politicians, teachers, journalists, first responders and artists, among other roles.

Further on the agenda, the City’s planned update to the Local Hazard Mitigation Plan “includes a revised order of ‘Earthquake,’ ‘Energy Disruption,’ and ‘Drought’ as higher risk, when compared to the 2015 plan,” City Council’s background on the update states.

Furthermore, “Pandemic” was also added to the City’s list as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and “Man-Made Hazards” was adjusted to include Cyber Attack and Terrorism.

Updates to the Hazard Mitigation Plan involved a process that included collaboration among City of Santa Clarita staff and local residents, representatives from local school districts, utility companies, Los Angeles County emergency services and non-profit organizations.

Also on the City Council’s agenda is a solar-powered lighting project for residents using the Newhall Park and Ride at nighttime, according to the City Council’s schedule.

“In May 2021, staff solicited proposals to install solar-powered exterior lighting within the Newhall Park and Ride lot,” background on the project reads. “The scope of this project includes the procurement and installation of luminaires, poles, solar panels, batteries, and a control system to enhance nighttime lighting for residents utilizing the Newhall Park and Ride.”

According to the background information on the topic, City Council staff recommends awarding the construction contract for the Newhall Park and Ride Solar Lighting Project to California Professional Engineering, Inc., the lowest responsive bidder, in the amount of $123,614.

This week’s City Council meeting is slated for 6 p.m. Pacific Time at Santa Clarita City Hall. For more information on the meeting’s schedule, click here.
