‘Prestigious’ National Award Given To Los Angeles County Library

On Monday, it was announced that the American Library Association’s John Cotton Dana Library Award for excellence in library public relations and strategic communication would be awarded to the Los Angeles County Library.

The L.A. County Library, which has a location in Santa Clarita, received the American Library Association’s John Cotton Dana Library Award this week for excellence in library public relations and strategic communication.

“L.A. County Library is receiving the award for its Park & Connect Free Outdoor Wi-Fi Program,” officials with L.A. County Library stated. “In response to the widening digital divide during the pandemic, the Library implemented the new program to make technology accessible outside its walls and into its parking lots. Park & Connect allows customers to park in branch parking lots to access free Wi-Fi at 32 locations.”

The American Library Association (ALA) has reportedly awarded seven winners this year’s John Cotton Dana Library Public Relations Awards. The H.W. Wilson Foundation awards a $10,000 grant to libraries that win the award.

2021 winners are slated to be honored at a reception held by EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) at the 2022 ALA Annual Conference in Chicago, according to Library officials.

The L.A. County Library’s marketing team is being commended for reportedly developing a comprehensive campaign around this new service aimed at residents who lack regular internet access, according to officials.

“The campaign resulted in nearly 111,000 Wi-Fi sessions being logged in the targeted communities,” Library officials stated.

The Library developed strategies for the service with ethnic and hyper-localized marketing efforts that spoke to the complex dynamics of a variety of diverse communities, according to officials.

The other 2021 award winners were the Chicago Public Library, Anchorage Public Library, Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library, Edmonton Public Library, Fort Worth Public Library, Spartanburg County Public Libraries and Whatcom County Library System.

In 1946, the John Cotton Dana Awards were first inaugurated by the H.W. Wilson Publishing Company and the ALA. The award is known for being one of the most prestigious to recognize public relations and marketing excellence.
