Masks To Be Required At Outdoor Events In L.A. County Starting Thursday

Masks are expected to be required at large outdoor events in Los Angeles County starting Thursday, regardless of COVID-19 vaccination status, according to an updated health officer order.

The updated Health Officer order requires all persons at an “Outdoor Mega Event to wear a face mask, except when actively eating or drinking,” according to a Tuesday announcement.

The order goes on to clarify that “‘actively eating or drinking’ is the limited time during which the mask can be removed briefly to eat or drink,” and masks must be immediately put back on once the activity is complete.

Masks have already been required indoors for several weeks after a recent increase in COVID-19 cases.

Mega-Events are those with large crowds greater than 5,000 attendees indoors and 10,000 outdoors, according to Public Health.

“During this time of high transmission of a very infectious variant, I want to caution everyone to take precautions, even vaccinated people,” said Dr. Barbara Ferrer, Director of L.A. County Public Health on Saturday. “While there is clear evidence that risks are significantly reduced for vaccinated individuals, common-sense precautions are warranted by everyone at this time, in part because fully vaccinated people infected with the Delta variant can transmit the virus to other people.

Public Health identified as of Monday, 1,347,023 positive cases of COVID-19 across all areas of L.A. County and a total of 24,892 deaths.

There are also 1,627 people with COVID-19 currently hospitalized and 23 percent of these people are in the intensive care unit (ICU).
