Investigation Into Fatal Castaic Crash Continues, Street Racing May Be A Factor

Traffic investigators are continuing their investigation into a Castaic crash that claimed the life of a 17-year-old Sunday.

Almost two days after the crash occurred on the 28400 block of Sloan Canyon Road near Castaic High School, investigators are continuing to investigate what caused the crash and if any charges are going to be pressed, said Sgt. David Shoemaker, with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Traffic Office.

Just before the crash occurred, surveillance footage showed two cars, a Volkswagen and a Honda driving at high-rates of speed.

As of Tuesday, traffic investigators have not deemed the crash to be from street racing, however, they are not leaving it out as a factor, Shoemaker said.

“We have the other car that was involved and all the individuals were all identified,” Shoemaker said.

Investigators are continuing to interview the survivors Tuesday. It is unclear if any charges are going to be pressed on the drivers of both vehicles, according to officials.

Kayla Payan, a 17-year-old resident from Castaic was the passenger killed when the Volkswagen she was in flipped and landed in a backyard of a residence on Sloan Canyon Road.

Investigators have taken blood samples from both drivers, and are awaiting results from the lab to see if drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash.
